you buy yours make sure they have 3 years left on them.
NOTE: Hold onto old flares, don't throw them away. They probably still work, the
more you have the better chance of being spotted in an emergency.
Vessel Safety Checks are conducted by the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the
U. S. Power Squadron. They are free, and completely confidential. No vessel or
operator is reported to any law enforcement authority or insurance company in
the event of a failure to pass the examination. Specially trained officers are
available at various locations during the boating season to conduct a safety
check of your boat and insure that your boat meets the minimum state and federal
requirements. Our Officers will check the items listed below:
Upon completion of your Vessel Safety Check a decal will be affixed to the window area of
your boat which will inform law enforcement authorities that your
boat has met the current safety requirements for the current year.
- Correct Numbering
- Boat Registration is current and aboard
- PFDs (Life Jackets) in GOOD condition, unwrapped, and easily accessible
- Proper ventilation of fuel and engine compartments
- Fire Extinguishers, properly charged and mounted..
- Sound Producing device
- Navigation lights in working condition
- Visual Distress Signals (flares) are not expired
- Backfire Flame Arresters for inboard or IOs
- All required ecological placards are aboard and posted.
In addition, the Inspecting Officer will provide you with information on the
security regulations currently in effect for your area of operations, as well as
safety and accident prevention issues you should be aware of.
